Kaláris – South Australia’s only working hungarian dance group

Kaláris is South Australia’s only working dance group and was established four years ago. Our aim is to offer our Hungarian dance traditions to Hungarian children and adults who live in the South Australian diaspora as well as to everyone without Hungarian origin who would like to join us.

Hungarian Dance

The group caters for several different age groups. Kaláris extends its voluntary activity to the children of the Hungarian Community School of Adelaide. We run two children’s groups and an adult group. We mainly learn traditional Hungarian folk games with the little ones. From ten years of age we start to introduce easier Hungarian folkdances. We regularly organise children’s táncház (folk dance party) too. In the last four years the adult group learned and performed mainly Transylvanian, Upper Hungarian and mainland Hungarian dances.

Our several performances are a proof that there is a high need expressed from the local Hungarian organisations to host Hungarian folk dance traditions at their venues. Kaláris is regularly invited by the Australian community for festivals and performances. This year the dance group has been contributing to 37 performances and dance programmes.
